Beyond Sunscreen: A Conversation About an Additional Layer of Protection Against UV-Induced Damage

As the summer months bring longer days and stronger UV exposure, protecting your skin becomes an even greater priority for people living with Gorlin syndrome. Whether you're an adult managing your own skin health, a teenager becoming more independent, or the parent of a young child, this time of year often means thinking carefully about sun protection strategies.

Dr. Andrea Rustad sits down with Dr. Noreen Galaria, board-certified dermatologist and founder of Inner Glow Vitamins, to discuss the science behind a plant-derived fern extract that has been studied for its potential to provide an additional layer of protection against UV-induced damage when used alongside standard sun protection measures.

The supplement discussed in this conversation has been advertised as safe for use in children ages 3+ and older, making it a topic that may also be of interest to parents looking to discuss additional options with their child's dermatologist.

During the conversation, Dr. Galaria explains what is currently known about this naturally derived oral antioxidant, how it works, and where it may fit into a comprehensive sun protection strategy. Importantly, she emphasizes that these supplements are not a replacement for sunscreen, sun-protective clothing, shade, or other recommended sun safety practices, but may serve as an additional tool alongside these established measures.

For members of the Gorlin syndrome community who spend significant time thinking about UV exposure and skin health, the discussion offers an opportunity to learn about an emerging area of dermatologic research in sun protection.

As always, we encourage members of our community to discuss any supplements or changes to their skincare routine with their dermatologist or healthcare provider before beginning a new regimen.

We are grateful to Dr. Rustad and Dr. Galaria for sharing their expertise and helping make current dermatology research more accessible to the Gorlin syndrome community.
